Dr. Joseph Pizzorno,

Author of ”The toxin solution: Environmental Toxins and Neurodegenerative Disease

Environmental toxins are a primary driver of disease, and a host of these toxins have been implicated in the development of neurodegenerative disease. Pesticides have repeatedly been identified as risk factors for Parkinson disease (PD), but metals, solvents, PCBs, and other halogenated organic compounds are also implicated in PD, as well as Alzheimer disease and ALS. These toxins appear to induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuronal cell death. Long-term exposures to these environmental contaminants, together with bioaccumulation over an individual’s lifetime, are speculated to induce neuroinflammation and neuropathology, paving the way for the development of various neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Joseph Pizzorno will review the literature showing which toxins are most significant for each degenerative disease, discuss practical ways to determine which patients are most likely to carry a high toxic load, and then decrease exposure and improve biotransformation.

Cognitive Decline and the Use of Hormone Replacement Therapy in Women

In conventional medicine, estrogen-containing hormone therapy in women used to prevent or treat cognitive aging or dementia is generally not recommended. However, there is a body of evidence that suggests it may in some cases be useful. Estrogens have in fact demonstrated potential benefits for the brain, including reduced oxidative stress and improved energy production. Some of the controversy in HRT considerations may have to do with the differences in effect between 17 beta estradiol (E2) and conjugated equine estrogens (CEE), but there are a variety of other factors that may come into play. Women arrive at the menopausal transition with differing risks for dementia and cognitive decline and the decision to use HRT may be more nuanced than is generally appreciated. Two exceptionally experienced clinicians in this area, Drs. Ann Hathaway and Wendy Warner, will present differing viewpoints on this important topic, which will then be followed by a facilitated Q and A.
